The Evolution of Moffett Forklifts: Pioneering Efficiency and Innovation

Source: Wikipedia.org under CC

The story of Moffett equipment is uniquely Irish, that is Republic of Ireland “Irish”.  The Hyster-Yale Group also builds forklifts in Craigavon Northern Ireland, but you can’t really consider products built there to be truly “Irish” products in the sense it’s not really engineering/invented there.  The Moffett story, however, is 100% Irish.

Origins: The Early Years

In 1945, Cecil Moffett founded the company in Clontibret, Ireland, initially producing specialized agricultural equipment for the local industry.   The product was pretty good and he built up a reputation known for quality and solid equipment.

Revolution and Expansion

In 1986, the company introduced a small revolution in the material handling industry with the invention of the truck-mounted forklift. This ingenious concept allowed for faster and more efficient deliveries. Its compact design, powerful performance, and versatility made it a game-changer for businesses worldwide.

In the USA, companies like Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menards along with other building supply companies found that Moffett invented, truck mounted forklifts were game changers.  Their delivery trucks included the forklift which delivered supplies to muddy job sites.  Contractors loved this style of delivery service: building supplies could be delivered on the job site closer to where the actual work was being done. There were others that built similar equipment, but Moffett really became the category leader here.  Engineering and manufacturing were done in Ireland.

In the 2000s, Moffett sold out to the Cargotec Corporation – a Finnish conglomerate specializing in cargo handling solutions.  Cargotec already owned Kooi, a Dutch manufacturer also specializing in truck-mounted forklifts. Moffett and Kooi consolidated their operations, blending their expertise into a unified product line rebranded as Hiab Moffett.

Innovation and Sustainability

As the 21st century unfolded, Moffett Forklifts remained at the forefront of innovation, embracing emerging technologies such as electric propulsion, digital connectivity, and advanced telemetry systems. These advancements not only improved operational efficiency and safety but also aligned with Moffett’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

In response to the growing emphasis on eco-friendly practices, Hiab Moffett introduced a range of electric and hybrid forklift models designed to minimize carbon emissions and reduce the ecological footprint of material handling operations. In 2013, Hiab Moffett launched the eSeries – ProFuture™—the world’s first Lithium-ion powered truck-mounted forklifts.

A Legacy of Excellence

Today, Moffett Forklifts still remains the category leader in this type of forklifts.  There are other brands but it’s safe to estimate that Moffett has over 75% market share in this category.
