Tim Finley got his start working on forklifts back in 2006. After a few stints at dealerships including Dougherty Equipment, Southeast Industrial, and CMH Services, Tim quit the dealership life and went out on his own in 2012.
He got the timing right. In 2015, the forklift dealership sector in the Carolinas underwent major changes. Dougherty Equipment closed its doors after selling the line to Gregory Poole. Mega dealer Barloworld exited the USA market. LiftOne and Gregory Poole quit CAT and started selling Hyster and Yale forklifts. CMH Services sold its operation and Crown started up factory stores.
As a result, there are fewer dealerships for technicians to work at and fewer options for businesses to choose from when looking for forklift maintenance and repair. “Dealers are charging crazy high prices to repair forklifts” Tim reports. “ I’ve seen a ton of crazy examples lately…I saw one invoice where a dealer charged $3800 to change an alternator!”
As an independent forklift mechanic, Tim’s customers enjoy direct access to their forklift mechanic. They can call or text him and find out directly from him what’s the issue with the forklift. Compare that with automated attendant phone systems, voicemail and missed calls from the mega-dealerships.
Tim’s independent spirit drove him to start his own business. This decision has afforded him the flexibility to set his own hours and offer a level of personalized attention that larger dealerships often struggle to match. Tim works on variety of different forklift brands including Toyota, Nissan, Hyster, and Yale as well as dock doors, dock plates and the occasional scissor lift.
